Unsubscribe links, CAN-SPAM and GDPR
On this page
Meisa adds a one-click unsubscribe header and a visible unsubscribe link to every marketing and lifecycle email, and stops emailing anyone who unsubscribes. You stay responsible for having permission to email people and for the rest of the law, like including your postal address.
What Meisa does for you
- One-click unsubscribe header. Broadcasts, sequences, automations and newsletter emails carry the List-Unsubscribe header with one-click support, which Gmail and Yahoo require from bulk senders. Inbox apps like Gmail can then show their own unsubscribe button next to your From name.
- A visible link in the email. If your email does not already have an unsubscribe link, Meisa adds a small footer: “Don’t want these emails? Unsubscribe from [your sender name].” If your template already uses
{{unsubscribe_url}}, Meisa leaves it alone, so there are never two footers. - Links that never expire. Unsubscribe links keep working forever and don’t need a login.
- Automatic suppression. Once someone unsubscribes, Meisa stops sending them marketing email from that product. Bounced and complained addresses are suppressed too. See Unsubscribes and suppressed addresses.
- Separate consent for newsletters and courses. Newsletter signups use double opt-in: people confirm by email before they are added. Leaving a newsletter or an email course does not unsubscribe someone from your product’s other emails.
Add your own unsubscribe link to a template
To control where the link sits, put {{unsubscribe_url}} in a link in your template footer, for example: “Unsubscribe from these emails”. See Build an email template.
Transactional emails
Receipts, password resets and security alerts are transactional. People still need them after unsubscribing from marketing.
- Open the transactional email in Transactional emails.
- Turn on Send even if the person unsubscribed only for receipts and security emails.
Never use this for marketing. Sending marketing to unsubscribed people breaks anti-spam law.
What you are responsible for
Meisa gives you the tools, but compliance is your responsibility. Make sure that:
- You have permission. Only email people who signed up or agreed to hear from you. Don’t import bought or scraped lists.
- Your postal address is in your emails. CAN-SPAM requires a valid physical postal address in commercial email. Add it to your template footer.
- Your From name and subject are honest. They must match who you are and what the email is about.
- You honor requests quickly. Meisa handles unsubscribe clicks at once. If someone asks you by reply or another channel, unsubscribe them yourself in Contacts (open the contact’s menu and click Unsubscribe).
GDPR
- For your contacts’ data, you are the data controller and Meisa is the data processor.
- Collect consent where the law requires it, and keep a record of how each person signed up.
- When a contact asks to see, correct or delete their data, you can handle it in Contacts. For help, email [email protected].
- For your own Meisa account data, see How Meisa protects your data and AWS keys and the Privacy Policy.
