Create a segment to target the right people
A segment is a saved group of contacts that updates itself from rules. Create one on the Contacts Segments tab, then pick it as a broadcast audience.

A segment is a saved group of contacts built from rules, like “opened at least 3 emails and tagged paid”. It updates itself as people change, so it is always current when you send. Create one on the Segments tab of Contacts, then choose it as the audience of a broadcast.
Create a segment
- Go to Contacts and open the Segments tab.
-
Click New segment.
-
Enter a Name, for example “Trials about to expire”, and an optional Description (optional).
- Under Who should be in this segment, choose Match all of these (every rule must be true) or Match any of these (one rule is enough).
- Build your first rule by picking a Field, a Condition and a Value.
- Click Add a rule to add more. Click Add a group to nest rules with their own all/any setting, for example “tagged paid AND (plan is pro OR plan is team)”.
- Watch the count at the bottom, for example “1,240 contacts match”. It updates as you edit.
- Click Create segment.
Fields you can use
- Contact details: Email, First Name, Last Name, Status, Source, Emails Sent, Emails Opened, Emails Clicked, Subscribed On, Last Activity.
- Tags: Has Tag.
- Custom fields: every extra field your contacts have, shown by name.
Conditions read like plain words: “is”, “is not”, “contains”, “does not contain”, “is more than”, “is at least” and so on, depending on the field.
Save a segment from your filters
On the People tab, set filters (status, tag, source or a search). When the filters can be saved as rules, a Save as segment button appears. Click it to save them as a segment you can reuse.
Use a segment in a broadcast
- Start a broadcast from Broadcasts, New broadcast.
- Under Who gets it, choose A saved segment and pick it from Segment.
Unsubscribed, bounced and spam-complaint contacts are never emailed, even if they match your rules. See Send your first broadcast.
You can also skip saving and choose Build a custom audience in the broadcast itself, to pick people by tag, source or email for one send.
Edit or delete a segment
On the Segments tab, click … on the segment’s row and choose Edit segment or Delete segment. Deleting a segment never deletes its contacts. Draft or scheduled broadcasts that use it will need a new audience.
Troubleshooting
- The create button is greyed out: give the segment a name and finish every rule (each needs a value).
- “Could not count. Check your rules.” A value does not fit the field, for example text in a number field.
