# Unsubscribes and suppressed addresses

Meisa automatically stops emailing contacts who unsubscribed, whose address bounced, or who marked an email as spam. You do not need to clean your list by hand: these people stay in Contacts for your records, but broadcasts and sequences skip them.

## See who is not getting your emails

1. Go to **Contacts** and stay on the **People** tab.
2. Open **Filters** and set **Status** to one of:
   - **Unsubscribed**: they clicked unsubscribe, or you unsubscribed them.
   - **Bounced**: the address does not accept mail.
   - **Marked as spam**: they reported one of your emails as spam.
   - **Not subscribed (all)**: all three together.
   - **Everyone**: every contact, whatever their status.
3. Click a contact to open their profile. A line at the top explains why they are not emailed, for example "This address bounced, so Meisa won't email it."

By default the People tab shows **Subscribed** contacts only, so stopped contacts do not clutter your list.

## What each status means

| Status | How it happens | Can you re-subscribe them? |
|---|---|---|
| Unsubscribed | The person clicked the unsubscribe link, or you unsubscribed them | Yes, but only if they asked you to |
| Bounced | The receiving server rejected the address | No |
| Marked as spam | The person reported your email as spam | No |

Meisa also keeps an address-level block list behind the scenes. An address that hard bounced, belongs to a closed mailbox or a domain that cannot receive mail is blocked for every send, even if you add it again as a new contact. A spam complaint blocks that address for your products.

Some failures are handled for you:

- **Soft bounces** (a full mailbox, a server that is briefly down): Meisa pauses marketing email to that address for 24 hours. After 3 soft bounces in 30 days the address is treated as bounced for good and unsubscribed.
- **Disposable inboxes** (throwaway addresses): Meisa skips them for broadcasts and sequences.

## Unsubscribe someone yourself

- **One person:** open their profile and click **Unsubscribe**.
- **Several people:** on the **People** tab, tick their rows and choose **Unsubscribe** from the bulk actions.

They stop getting broadcasts and sequence emails right away.

## Re-subscribe someone

Only do this when the person has asked to hear from you again.

1. Open the contact's profile.
2. Click **Re-subscribe**.
3. Tick the box confirming they asked to be re-subscribed.
4. Confirm.

The option only appears for **Unsubscribed** contacts. Bounced and spam-complaint contacts cannot be re-subscribed, because sending to them would hurt your sender reputation.

## Topic preferences

Every email has a link to a preference page where people can switch off single email types (for example **Product updates** or **Offers and promotions**) and keep the rest. You can see their choices on the contact's profile under **Email preferences**. Pick the right **Email type** when you write a broadcast so these choices are respected.

## Transactional emails

Receipts and security emails sent through triggers can use **Send even if the person unsubscribed** ("For receipts and security emails only"). Bounced and blocked addresses are still never emailed, because the mail could not be delivered anyway.
